Hi,

Today we want you, the reader, to take part in a game to improve your language skills. The person behind this initiative is really Mrs. Laura Bush, the First Lady. But she doesn't wish her name to be mentioned. She's a very discrete lady. Instead, it'll be her husband, the President, who'll pretend to ask the questions.

After all, he's always taken a keen interest in the use of correct English. And teaching kids has been his favorite occupation all along. Do you remember what he was doing when he had to be informed of 9/11?... He was at an elementary school in Sarasota, Florida, sitting at the blackboard and teaching little school kids: He pretended to be reading a story to second-graders about a girl's pet goat. But on closer inspection one can see the book he was holding in his hand upside down. Never mind. Reading makes a country great.

Please, help me and insert (or leave as it stands): BECAUSE OF or AS or BECAUSE or DESPITE or AS SOON AS or NEVER MIND. Please note: Your corrections are valuable and can save human lives.

BECAUSE OF/AS/BECAUSE/DESPITE/AS SOON AS/NEVER MIND the U.S. emergency-response systems haven’t improved during the years since 9/11, after the tsunami disaster and since hurricane Katrina; and

BECAUSE OF/AS/BECAUSE/DESPITE/AS SOON AS/NEVER MIND our systems didn’t function during any of the recent disasters such as the Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2004 and during Katrina in 2005 (America's own eqivalent of the Tsunami); and

BECAUSE OF/AS/BECAUSE/DESPITE/AS SOON AS/NEVER MIND our functionaries and experts, lots of them, are still failing to do their jobs properly: As a matter of fact, nobody in our highly developed emergency systems is talking with anybody else; and

BECAUSE OF/AS/BECAUSE/DESPITE/AS SOON AS/NEVER MIND all our myriad high-tech emergency systems have invariably failed; and

BECAUSE OF/AS/BECAUSE/DESPITE/AS SOON AS/NEVER MIND nobody knows who has to take which decisions during an emergency and who is responsible for what, in other words, our decision-taking ability and our responses aren't good enought when an emergency arises; and

BECAUSE OF/AS/BECAUSE/DESPITE/AS SOON AS/NEVER MIND there's no communication between state authorities, the incompetent fools of the United States military (equipped with the latest highly sophisticated gear) the local authorities and the affected communities; and

BECAUSE OF/AS//BECAUSE/DESPITE/AS SOON AS/NEVER MIND disaster prevention and preparedness is only printed paper; and

BECAUSE OF/AS/BECAUSE/DESPITE/AS SOON AS/NEVER MIND there's an immense bureaucratic mess; and also

BECAUSE OF/AS/BECAUSE/DESPITE/AS SOON AS/NEVER MIND last year America spent 547 billion dollars for its troops worldwide and this year we'll also be spending more than 500 bn…

to me, G.W. Bush, this is mind-boggling; and besides

BECAUSE OF/AS/BECAUSE/DESPITE/AS SOON AS/NEVER MIND we are wasting billions for unnecessary wars overseas... had I only saved some of these billions, I could have bought some shiny new firefighting aircraft for my friend the Gubernator in Sacramento who's needing them so badly; and

BECAUSE OF/AS/BECAUSE/DESPITE/AS SOON AS/NEVER MIND for the fighting of blazes the poor State of California and its National Guard were able to muster only a single helicopter from their own state; and

BECAUSE OF/AS/BECAUSE/DESPITE/AS SOON AS/NEVER MIND year after year we see the same picture: immense wildfires in California because of/as/because/despite/as soon as/never mind the original seats of blazes aren't immediately extinguished; and

BECAUSE OF/AS/BECAUSE/DESPITE/AS SOON AS/NEVER MIND lack of pre-emptive measures, failure to act promptly and efficiently.

BECAUSE OF/AS/BECAUSE/DESPITE/AS SOON AS/NEVER MIND California has failed the emergency test!

BECAUSE OF/AS/BECAUSE/DESPITE/AS SOON AS/NEVER MIND no lessons learnt from recent disasters.

BECAUSE OF/AS/BECAUSE/DESPITE/AS SOON AS/NEVER MIND we can only see the same mess as last year in the failed state of Greece.

BECAUSE OF/AS/BECAUSE/DESPITE/AS SOON AS/NEVER MIND no improvements have been made. Nothing effective has been done. Incredible - but true.

IT SEEMS, I have to admit my own lack of responsibility and competence...

SO CONSEQUENTLY, I, the President of the United States, George W. Bush, have to throw the towel and I'll go along with what my friend the Governor of California proclaimed:

THE STATE OF EMERGENCY

I, George W. Bush, don't object.

PS. Though my government already has many highly developed systems, however, there are often significant problems associated with sharing information with those in other countries or even between the United States' emergency agencies. The problem is compounded within individual agencies because all relevant emergency data and other information details are typically processed by separate information systems - the typical case of a snafu.
