MRCC/ INMARSAT/NAVTEX ON 26. DECEMBER 2004 FOR SHIPS IN THE INDIAN OCEAN
Dear Sirs,
Just
today I looked through the paper edition of the Admiralty Notices for Mariners
(NM’s) Part III, Navigational Warnings, weekly edition 1 from 6. January 2005 and
I could not find any printed information about a MSI navigational SECURITÉ
warning (MSI= Maritime Safety Information) over MRCC, NAVTEX and INMARSAT relating
the NAVAREAs VII, VIII, IX, X, XI (Indian Ocean) in regard to the very strong earthquake
off the NW coast of Sumatra on 26. December 2004 and a danger of tsunami for
ships and people staying in the coastal areas.
Could you friendly explain me the lack of this very important message?

NAVAREAs
are the geographic areas in which various governments are responsible for
navigation and weather warnings. NAVAREAs are mentioned in International Maritime Organization
Assembly Resolution A.706(17) adopted 6 November 1991. The International Hydrographic
Organization publication S-53 has a document entitled
"Worldwide Navigational Warnings Service - Guidance Document" which
is related to NAVAREAs.
